How to make your home cleaner, greener and smarter

Earth comprises limited resources; resources which we rely on for survival. Often, the question arises; why should we go green? Saving the planet may not be only for altruistic purposes. It is the key to our own continued existence, to the health of our families and the safety of our homes.

In any cleaning cabinet, one would find at least 15 different cleaning agents, most of which use chemicals that are not only dangerous to the environment, but also to your health and to the health of those around you. These synthetic agents contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be inhaled as they are used, while other ingredients are absorbed by the skin causing serious side effects.

Aside from the health dangers, these VOCs are also heavily polluting in their production, contributing to air pollution while biodegrading slowly and incompletely. Some products list formaldehyde as an ingredient even though it has been banned globally in developed countries.

According to John J Coetzee, CEO at Green Worx Cleaning Solutions; “Keeping a home clean may be a constant challenge, and many strive to achieve this by finding the strongest chemicals they can and dousing their home in it. However, these chemicals pose their own dangers, and aren’t cleaning as effectively as you think they are.”

Green Worx utilises innovative, bio-technology manufacturing processes in order to deliver green cleaning solutions that are tough on dirt, but kind to people and the environment. The use of bio-technology in the production of cleaning products entails the utilisation of enzymes and good bacteria, in order to combat (and eliminate) dirt, grease, grime and bad bacteria.

“In their natural environment, bacteria produce hundreds of enzymes in response to the organics present in their environment. They produce extracellular enzymes that break down proteins, starches, fats, oils, greases, urine, esters and toilet tissue into smaller particles outside the bacterial cell,” explains Coetzee. “The bacteria then transport the smaller particles across their cell membrane for use as an energy source and for building of new cellular components. Since bacteria detect the organics present as potential food and produce specific enzymes to breakdown these organics, it is a very efficient system.”

Truly green solutions break down dirt and grease into organic nutrients which are then released safely back into the environment. The key benefits are that harmful chemical compounds are not released into the atmosphere or into our water systems. This means that family members and domestic workers are not exposed to toxic fumes and chemicals, increasing safety and decreasing health risks. The more regularly these products are used, the more effective they become.

Enzyme-based cleaners have also been proven as especially useful for biofilm removal. Bad bacteria create this biofilm, a hood” to hide under, which chemical cleaners can’t penetrate. “Bacteria are somewhat difficult to remove with traditional alkaline or acid cleaners. Enzyme cleaners are more effective on biofilms since they work as proteases by breaking down proteins.” The enzymes utilised in these products include protease, lipase, amylase, cellulase, Mannanase and pectinase.

When the health and wellbeing of your family is in question, along with the cleanliness of your home, option for the safer, more effective product seems to be the most logical choice. “Being green is more than just buying ‘eco’. It is an unshakable commitment to a sustainable lifestyle,” concludes Coetzee. “The time to be an #ecowarrior is now.”
